![]() When you think about it, any day could be National Food Day. You eat every day – shouldn’t it follow that every day you should think about what you’re eating? We should, but of course we don’t. For many of us, when it comes to what actually goes into our bodies, ignorance is bliss. Documentaries are all about combating ignorance, however. A good documentary will refocus our attention onto something we never should have overlooked in the first place. Campaigns like Food Day operate on the same principle. By devoting one capital-D “Day” to something, they teach us something about every other day. October 24th has been set aside so that, hopefully, we’ll continue to eat better on October 25th. In honor of Food Day, here’s our rundown of our absolute favorite food documentaries: Food Matters The original documentary went from a standalone film to the flagship of a multimedia empire. Food Matters has spawned a sequel, along with books and other merchandise. Perhaps the most impressive outgrowth of the Food Matters brand is its Facebook community, where fans meet to swap recipes or get answers to such pressing questions as “What’s the best oil to cook with?” or “Carob or cocoa powder?” Eating right is always easier when you have a friend to bounce meal ideas off of – if you’re part of the Food Matters fanpage, you have 316,000 friends at your disposal. Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead Juice cleanses have taken over Hollywood, with everyone from Salma Hayek to Fred Durst turning to liquid diets. After seeing this movie, it’s impossible to dismiss this as a simple fad. At turns heartwarming and hilarious, Joe Cross’s story of overcoming obesity and autoimmune disease just might inspire you to go out and buy a new food processor. Juice-it-up now. In Organic We Trust Organic is the new black. But is it real, or just a marketing scam? Director Kip Pastor encourages viewers to become more informed about what they're consuming, and more involved in finding a healthy, sustainable food system. This doc shows us there is hope in the food industry. Skeptical? The film's Facebook page is filled with healthy lifestyle tips and eye-opening facts will no doubt grab your attention! Vegucated There are many people that roll their eyes when they hear the word "vegan," but perhaps hearing the facts would change their mind. In this film we follow three New Yorkers who adopt a Vegan diet for six weeks. To our shock, and theirs, these three meat-lovers end up risking everything to expose the industry they once supported. Have you been Vegucated? Learn some great vegan recipes here. Food Stamped This experimental documentary will no doubt keep you entertained. Reminiscent of 'Super Size' me, but on the opposite spectrum, this film follows a couple that attempt to maintain a healthy diet on a food stamp budget. 'Food Stamped’ focuses on the circumstance of poverty in the US and encourages nutrition over volume, a food movement that could change future generations. These are some of the films that showed us how we should (or shouldn’t) be eating. Also check out Farmageddon, The Perfect Human Diet, and American Meat.
