If you can't remember the last time you went to a brick-and-mortar video store, that's because many of them have closed.

This past decade has seen a radical change in the face of the movie rental industry. If you are an independent filmmaker navigating this environment for the first time, the process may seem daunting, but never fear!

Our Acquisitions and Sales Manager Mat Levy has answered some of the most commonly-asked questions about Redbox and Netflix.

My film didn’t get into Redbox/Netflix. Do I get another chance?

Yes! There is ample opportunity. While these are both challenging areas to expose indie film, Redbox and Netflix are both thriving businesses that know the marketplace and understand their audience. If you didn’t get into Redbox in the first round, increase your social media exposure to prove that by placing your film in the Redbox system, consumers will come. They will be all ears next time around.

In terms of Netflix, they’re also about exposure. A key to getting your film rented in the DVD area is Queue Demand. If enough people place your movie in Netflix Queue and they see it has a sizable consumer base, they’ll be happy to take it in. This will also help you get that deal for VOD.

How much money could I potentially make if I get into Netflix?

The amount can range. We have seen deals as long as the single digit thousands to high double digit thousands. No matter what the deal is, remember to prepare elements that Netflix requires now that might cost additional fees such as E & O insurance (errors and omissions) and closed captioning.

How long does it take to get my film onto Netflix/Hulu?

This depends on their title slate for the month. In order to get digitized and on the platform, this traditionally takes 1 month after their acceptance of your title.
